Your Wellness Team Doesn’t Follow the Calendar — But Your Life Does

September has that particular energy. Routines shift, schedules fill back up, activities start again. Whether you have kids or not, there’s a collective exhale and reset that happens this time of year — and with it, a kind of low level discomfort as everyone adjusts to the new rhythm.

For those of us with a wellness team, one of the quiet gifts of that is having one less thing to figure out in the middle of all that change. The team continues. What shifts is how we use it.

Your Body Doesn’t Know What Month It Is

Here’s something I’ve come to understand about wellness support: your body and your healing don’t follow the calendar the way we do. They respond to what’s actually happening in your life.

When sports season starts, your body feels that. You’re working harder physically and mentally — and those needs show up in your body whether you acknowledge them or not. When the holiday season arrives and family gatherings and celebrations create more stress, your body feels that too. The calendar might be the trigger but your body is just responding to what’s actually going on.

So when I talk about adjusting your wellness team through the year, I’m not suggesting you follow a rigid seasonal schedule. I’m suggesting you pay attention to what your life is actually asking of your body — physically, mentally and spiritually — and let that guide the adjustments. That looks different for everyone.

In high sport season we might increase a few practitioner sessions to help with sore muscles or the physical demand. In the off season we still see those practitioners — because the body is still healing, it just has more room to do so. The team doesn’t disappear when the pressure eases. It just shifts gear.

When Financial Constraints Are Real

I want to talk about something that doesn’t get discussed enough in wellness spaces: money. Benefits plans run out. Budgets are tight. And for a lot of people, seeing practitioners consistently throughout the year simply isn’t financially possible. I get that completely. Neither choosing to use benefits only when needed nor scrambling to use them up before year end is wrong — both are real and valid responses to real constraints.

But if you have some flexibility, here’s how I’d encourage you to think about it. Start not with money but with need. Ask yourself first — what do I actually need? What do I want? Then look at what you can financially afford and figure out how to bridge the two.

If your benefits plan covers say $500 for massage, cost out what each session runs and what you’re reimbursed after. If that gives you four or five sessions for the year, look at your calendar. Are there seasons you know are more stressful? Times you’ll be more physically active? Space those sessions intentionally rather than reactively. Use them where they’ll do the most work.

And if your budget only allows for one session every three months — that’s okay. What I’d gently ask is this: what if that consistency, even at that pace, helps prepare your body for the things you can’t predict? Because I’ve seen it. When people have even a baseline of regular support, they tend to recover faster, notice things sooner, and feel less blindsided when harder seasons arrive.

The Patterns You’ll Start to See

Does figuring all of this out take time? Yes. Are the patterns always obvious at first? For some people yes, for others not at all. I wasn’t someone who saw them quickly. But when I started paying attention and asking the right questions, I was surprised by how quickly they emerged.

You start to notice that you always feel rundown in November. That your back always tightens in February. That you consistently need more emotional support in the weeks before a big family event. These patterns aren’t random — they’re your body telling you something it has been trying to communicate for a while. And once you see them, you can start to work with them rather than just react to them.

September is as good a time as any to start asking these questions. The routines are resetting anyway. Why not reset your approach to your own wellbeing at the same time?

If you’d like help figuring out what your team could look like — or how to make the most of what you already have access to through your benefits plan — that’s exactly what my Intuitive Wellness Sessions are for.

Have you ever noticed seasonal patterns in what your body needs? I’d love to hear what you’ve noticed.
